Mechanical Engineer

Our South African manufacturing site, an MHI facility based in Hammarsdale, Kwazulu Natal is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to join our team. The main purpose of this role is to plan and supervise mechanical and process engineering work on the Plant, as well as service equipment, during and outside normal working hours, to enable the requirements of the Company to be achieved in an efficient and cost-effective way.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Maintain all plant and service equipment as per a maintenance schedule, and operate a Call-Out System to provide mechanical, electrical and instrumentation support outside of core hours ensuring optimum performance of the production facilities on site.

• Plan & supervise repairs to production equipment and site services to keep downtime to a minimum and implement plant modifications to accommodate changes in process technologies and techniques.

• To promote a culture of continuous improvement and seek new ways to improve processes in order to maximise availability of plant and equipment, in a safe and cost-effective manner.

• Ensure the site maintenance network is operating safely and efficiently according to PSM, SABS, OHS Act and all relevant company, HSE and legislative requirements.

• To follow prescribed safe systems of working at all times, ensuring adherence to all Company and legislative procedures and requirements.

• To undertake all identified and relevant training requirements to meet Company and legislative standards and undertake training in other related activities in order to develop multi-skilling capabilities.

• Create & supervise plant preventative maintenance procedures.

• Modify P&ID’s and complete equipment drawings for new projects.

• Plan routine maintenance of plant equipment and machinery.

• Analyse breakdowns, diagnose faults and supervise time critical equipment repairs.

• Offer technical expertise to maintenance team.

• Manage budget for current and future equipment upgrades and replacements.

• Support ongoing preventative maintenance program.

• Maintain a safety register e.g., ladders, slings, lifting equipment, pressure vessels, etc. and conduct regular audit to ensure compliance.

• Organise routine servicing schedules & calibration of instruments.Allocate work to contractors.

• Carrying out quality inspections.

• To facilitate the introduction of new Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) processes to plant scale and ensure ongoing, successful and robust manufacturing.

• To develop and maintain effective working relationships with manufacturing colleagues to ensure effective data management, implementation of improvement programmes and knowledge transfer.

• Assess Electrical and Instrumentation processes, take measurements and interpret data through statistical analysis.

• To devise and deliver specific training programmes to improve the process knowledge and understanding by developing best practices, routines and innovative solutions to improve production rates and quality of outputs.

• To liaise effectively with E&I contractors and colleagues to ensure the effective and efficient delivery of projects.

• Be available after normal working hours to assist with troubleshooting and resolving any possible issues that may arise on-site related to E&I.

• To engineer and project manage all stages of E&I Capital Investment Projects from initiation to beneficial operation, taking an active consultative role in site HSE matters and provide a technical advisory service to Operations.

• To be in involved and manage various E&I CI projects.

• Manage, update & maintain any documentation related to various processes across the site including E&I drawings.

• Manage and oversee electrical and instrumentation contractors on-site.

• Participation in E&I equipment selection, preparation of positional drawings and training.

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Mechanical Engineering Degree (BSC or BEng Mechanical Engineering).

• BSc / BEng Mechanical engineering with a minimum of 3 years chemical industrial experience.

• Ability to prioritise and organise a demanding workload, adapting to fit the changing needs of the business.

• Strong communication and negotiation skills with internal and external contacts at all levels.

• Knowledge of regulations and standards for mechanical design, specification, installation and maintenance, with specific reference to hazardous area application.

• Excellent Microsoft Office 365 skills.

• Heavy machinery network operation and maintenance experience.

• Knowledge and experience of LEAN Manufacturing or similar techniques.

• Knowledge and experience of AutoCAD and Solidworks a big advantage.

• Supervisory or management experience an advantage.
