The Midland Group is seeking a motivated, reliable, and hands-on individual to fill the dual role of Mechanic & Farm Assistant at one of our mixed-crop farms in Sasolburg. This position offers an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working both in the workshop and in the field, contributing to the overall success of a modern farming enterprise.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of agricultural vehicles, machinery, implements, and equipment, while also assisting the Farm Manager with a variety of day-to-day farming activities.
Duties & Responsibilities
Includes, but is not limited to the following
- Diagnose, service, maintain, and repair tractors, vehicles, harvesters, trailers, irrigation equipment, farm implements, and other agricultural machinery.
- Conduct preventative maintenance programs to minimise equipment downtime.
- Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and diesel engine faults.
- Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and a clean working environment.
- Keep accurate maintenance and repair records.
- Source and manage spare parts as required.
- Complete routine or ad hoc repair and maintenance tasks.
- Assist the Farm Manager with daily farming operations.
- Operate tractors and farm machinery safely and efficiently.
- Assist with planting, spraying, irrigation, harvesting, and other crop production activities.
- Monitor farming equipment and report any defects or operational concerns.
- Support general farm maintenance, including fencing, infrastructure, and storage facilities.
- Supervise or assist farm labour teams when required.
- Perform other farming-related tasks as assigned to ensure efficient farm operations.
- Perform any other tasks as instructed, required, necessary or as expected to be performed.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- Proven experience as a mechanic or in a similar position, preferably in the agricultural sector.
- Sound knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and agricultural equipment.
- Experience operating tractors and farm machinery.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Good problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's licence.
- Knowledge of crop farming practices will be beneficial.
- Honest, dependable, and self-motivated.
- Strong work ethic and attention to detail.
- Willingness to learn and take on a variety of responsibilities.
- Good communication and organisational skills.
- Flexible and willing to work extended hours during peak farming seasons.
