Role Purpose

  • Provide strategic leadership, commercial direction, and end-to-end P&L accountability for Retail or Commercial Banking across multiple African markets. The job drives sustainable growth, competitive propositions, multi-segment customer value, and strong governance while enabling digital transformation and operational excellence across diverse regulatory environments.

Are you someone who can

  • Define, lead, and continuously refine the multi-country strategy for Retail or Commercial Banking, addressing market maturity, competitive dynamics, and regulatory needs in each jurisdiction.
  • Translate Group strategic ambitions into executable country-level business plans with clear performance targets, financial outcomes, and transformation objectives.
  • Evaluate market-entry opportunities, partnerships, and ecosystem plays fintech, telco, payments, platform integrations to expand distribution, improve customer access, and diversify revenue streams.
  • Champion innovation and digital disruption initiatives to future-proof business models and unlock multi-market synergies.
  • Own end-to-end P&L for Retail or Commercial Banking across markets, balancing growth, profitability, and risk to maximise long-term franchise value.
  • Lead the design and management of product suites across segments: deposits, lending, payments, working capital, trade, FX, cash management, merchant solutions, and insurance partnerships.
  • Enhance pricing models, fees, and value-based bundling to optimise returns while ensuring affordability and regulatory compliance.
  • Monitor and manage portfolio performance including revenue drivers, cost lines, capital usage, impairment trends, and portfolio diversification across sectors and customer types.
  • Develop customer strategies for retail segments mass, mass affluent, youth, premium and commercial segments SME, mid-market, agri, sector specialists.
  • Strengthen omni-channel distribution by integrating digital platforms, branches, ATMs, agents, merchants, and call centres into a unified customer experience.
  • Drive improvement in customer acquisition, retention, cross-sell, and share-of-wallet through advanced analytics, targeted value propositions, and lifecycle management.
  • Establish and oversee customer experience standards, service KPIs, complaints management, and NPS improvement programmes across all countries.
  • Serve as accountable executive for first-line risk management across retail and commercial portfolios, ensuring robust credit origination, monitoring, and portfolio controls.
  • Strengthen credit governance frameworks, early warning systems, collections effectiveness, and recovery strategies to maintain portfolio health and minimise impairments.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and statutory requirements across all jurisdictions including AML/CFT, KYC, consumer protection, data privacy, market conduct, and prudential guidelines.
  • Embed a strong risk culture across multi-country teams, ensuring adherence to Group Risk Appetite and effective control environments.
  • Drive multi-country digital transformation by championing intuitive customer journeys, selfservice capabilities, and straight-through processing across retail and commercial channels.
  • Partner with Technology and Operations to implement scalable, interoperable platforms that enhance uptime, stability, cybersecurity resilience, and operational efficiency.
  • Promote data and analytics maturity across markets by embedding predictive analytics, customer insights, pricing models, and performance dashboards.
  • Guide automation and process optimisation initiatives to reduce cost-to-serve, turnaround times, and operational bottlenecks.
  • Lead high-performing multi-country leadership teams, ensuring strong succession pipelines, talent mobility, and capability uplift for critical skills.
  • Champion a culture of accountability, collaboration, inclusion, performance excellence, and empowerment across African markets.
  • Identify and develop leadership talent through coaching, structured development, and performance management frameworks.
  • Oversee workforce plans, skills transformation, and resource optimisation to enable operational effectiveness across markets.
  • Represent the business in high-level engagements with regulators, central banks, financial industry bodies, and key government stakeholders across African markets.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with DFIs, guarantee agencies, payments networks, telcos, fintechs, ERP providers, and corporate ecosystems to expand reach and enhance value propositions.
  • Influence Group executive committees, Group functions, and country executive teams to ensure alignment of strategy, policies, investment decisions, and risk appetite.
  • Serve as a senior ambassador for the institution across Africa, enhancing brand reputation and supporting market development initiatives.

You will be an ideal candidate if you have

  • A bachelor's degree in business, Commerce, Finance, Economics, Banking, Accounting, or a related field.
  • A postgraduate qualification, with an MBA or master's degree being advantageous.
  • 15+ years' experience within the Banking or Financial Services industry.
  • 10+ years' experience in senior executive leadership roles with P&L accountability.
  • Proven experience leading Retail Banking, Commercial Banking, or both across multiple countries or regions. Strong track record in strategy execution, business growth, and commercial performance management.
  • Experience driving digital transformation, innovation, and customer-centric business models.
  • Deep understanding of risk management, governance, regulatory compliance, and credit portfolio management across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Demonstrated success in influencing regulators, executive stakeholders, and strategic partners across African markets.
  • Proven ability to lead large, diverse teams and build high-performing, accountable cultures.
