Position Details
Position Summary: iThemba LABS seeks to appoint a Manager: Cyclotron Operations to manage the day-to-day operation of the accelerator complex.
Key Responsibilities: Manage design and construction of new accelerator components and modification of existing ones to improve the variety of beams and the beam intensity and quality. Collaborate on implementation of new equipment and software and advise on operational requirements. Manage and lead operational and technical staff in SSC, SAIF & MRD. Maintain good beam quality and high beam intensity for 24 hours per day and 7 days per week. Communicate with users on beam parameters possible delay in beam delivery. Implement measures to limit the downtime. Discuss user’s requirements and agree on timelines.
Requirements
Qualification: BSc. Hons or Postgraduate Diploma - in Physics/ Electronic/ Mechatronics Masters advantageous
Experience: Minimum 10 years’ experience in the operation, maintenance and development of accelerators, and of accelerator engineering projects. 3 years' management experience preferable
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Theoretical and practical knowledge of the design and operating principles of cyclotrons, beam lines and components such as magnets, RF resonators and vacuum and beam diagnostic equipment. Knowledge of mechanics and electromagnetism. Knowledge of electronic equipment is essential. Good communication skills. Ability to lead a diverse group of people. Conflict management skills.
