About the Opportunity

Our client is one of the largest insurance and financial services providers in South Africa, with a diverse portfolio spanning asset management, alternative investments, stockbroking, collective investment schemes, and local and offshore wealth platforms.

They're looking for a Legal Counsel (Retail) to join their Legal, Governance team, providing business-focused legal advice, contract support and product support to the retail side of the business. This is a great opportunity for an admitted attorney who wants to specialise in the LISP/wealth space and work across contracting, regulatory advisory and product development.

Duties & Responsibilities

What You'll Do

  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of legal documents, including investment management agreements, service level agreements, LISP SLAs, client-facing documents, product terms and data agreements.
  • Advise internal stakeholders on legal, contracting, product and regulatory queries.
  • Monitor legal risks and regulatory developments, and help embed a culture of good governance.
  • Provide legal support on new product launches and portfolio developments, working closely with tax, marketing, compliance and IT teams.
  • Carry out legal research and deliver commercially focused legal opinions.
  • Support the implementation of internal controls and continuous improvement of legal templates.

Desired Experience & Qualification

What You'll Bring

  • LLB degree and admission as an attorney.
  • 3–5 years' post-admission legal experience, ideally within a LISP/wealth business.
  • Strong knowledge of wealth platforms, retail and retirement investment products.
  • Working understanding of FAIS, FICA, CISCA, the Insurance Act, the Pension Funds Act and POPIA.
  • Solid, hands-on contract drafting and negotiation experience.
  • CFP designation is advantageous.
  • Strong communication skills, sound judgment, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
