RESPONSIBILITIES

The incumbent will be expected to

  • Engage in teaching, curriculum development, and co-ordination of programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
  • Supervise postgraduate research commensurate with the post level;
  • Supervise practical work in the MA Counselling Psychology programme, commensurate with the post level;
  • Conduct research commensurate with the level of appointment and actively contribute to the Department's research profile;
  • Perform various academic and administrative duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participate in the Department's strategic initiatives relating to teaching, research, and community engagement;
  • Contribute to transdisciplinary engagements in teaching and research.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS LECTURER

  • A Master's degree in Counselling Psychology;
  • Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa HPCSA as a Counselling Psychologist for at least 3 years;
  • Evidence of professional practice experience as a Counselling Psychologist;
  • The equivalent of 2 years' tertiary teaching experience, including block and/or temporary teaching; or relevant professional/industry experience;
  • Evidence of research productivity e.g., publications in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in peer-reviewed books; published conference papers, or equivalent recognised research outputs; significant progress in PhD studies.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : SENIOR LECTURER

  • A doctoral degree PhD in Psychology;
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Counselling Psychologist for at least 3 years;
  • Evidence of at least 4 years' tertiary teaching or professional experience;
  • Evidence of successful curriculum design and implementation;
  • Demonstrated research output, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals or equivalent;
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate research;
  • Conference presentations delivered;
  • Administrative experience at tertiary level.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS : ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

  • A doctoral degree PhD in Psychology;
  • Registration with the HPCSA as a Counselling Psychologist for at least 3 years;
  • At least 7 years' tertiary teaching or professional experience.
  • Evidence of successful curriculum design, implementation and leadership.
  • Demonstrated research output, as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals or equivalent;
  • Experience in supervising postgraduate research;
  • Conference presentations delivered;
  • Administrative experience on Faculty level;
  • Evidence of external examination of modules and postgraduate research.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES

  • Ability to train student psychologists and supervise their practical work;
  • Proven ability to lecture and supervise student psychologists in at least one of the following areas: psychodynamic psychotherapy, narrative psychotherapy, systemic therapeutic approaches, psychological assessment or African epistemologies;
  • Ability to lecture in at least two, but preferably more, of the following areas at the undergraduate level: introductory psychology, biological psychology, cognitive psychology, psychological assessment, social psychology, developmental psychology, psychopathology, community psychology, critical psychology;
  • Demonstrated research focus, aligned with departmental thematic areas.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

  • Experience in lecturing at the Master's level;
  • Experience in lecturing or professional training at the Master's level;
  • Proven ability to lecture and supervise student psychologists on psychological assessment;
  • A doctoral degree for Lecturer level;
  • NRF rating.
