The lead Primary Substation Design Engineer leads teams in designing substations for transmission and distribution projects, covering voltages from 400V (AC/DC) up to 400kV AC. Experience with 765kV AC or DC is an added advantage.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Review, approve, or prepare designs, specifications, and tender documents for substations (11kV–500kV) to international standards.
- Prepare detailed engineering and construction drawings (SLDs, layouts, protection, etc.).
- Perform engineering calculations and analysis (load flow, short circuit, protection studies).
- Select appropriate substation equipment.
- Prepare design reports, calculations, and technical documentation.
- Review contractor designs for compliance.
- Ensure adherence to IEC, IEEE, and SANS standards.
- Attend stakeholder meetings and prepare minutes.
- Support construction and commissioning phases, including technical queries and inspections.
- Prepare and review project scope, methodology, schedules, and budgets.
- Maintain relationships with divisions, contractors, and clients.
- Stay updated on technical procedures and specifications.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- B.Eng or B.Sc in Electrical Engineering
- Member of the ECSA
- 10+ years’ engineering experience in the field of substation detailed design – primary plant.
- Proficiency with modelling software such as CDEGs or similar would be an advantage.
- Proficiency with CAD design software or similar (MicroStation).
- Previous experience with system studies and secondary plant design will be an advantage.
