Role Purpose

  • To provide sound, practical and commercially relevant legal advisory services to the business, ensuring that legal risks are appropriately identified, managed and mitigated in support of the organisation's strategic and operational objectives within the life insurance environment.

Requirements

  • LLB Degree
  • Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa
  • At least 3 years legal experience
  • Exposure to financial services advantageous
  • Higher Diploma in Financial Planning advantageous

Foundational knowledge of

  • South African insurance and financial services legislation
  • Contract law
  • Privacy law
  • Payment systems and regulation
  • Retirement legislation
  • Basic litigation management principles

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Legal Advice
  • Practically interpret legislation, regulatory requirements and internal policies.
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to business units across the organisation.
  • Assess the impact and risk of changes in the regulatory and operating environment and communicate and report such impacts and risks to the business.
  • Partner with business to ensure an understanding of the legal implications of business decisions and operational processes.
  • Create and maintain a record of advice given in accordance with Metropolitan requirements.

Contract Drafting and Review

  • Draft and review such contracts as are required by the business.
  • Ensure contracts adequately protect the organisation's legal and commercial interests.
  • Update standard contract templates and playbooks for changes in the legal and regulatory environment.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date contract records.

Regulatory Support

  • Interpret and implement applicable regulation.
  • Assist with, draft and finalise responses to regulatory queries and requests.
  • Monitor legislative developments and provide updates to the business.
  • Prepare for, attend and actively participate in regulatory update meetings.

Legal Risk Management

  • Identify legal risks and recommend practical mitigation measures.
  • Escalate material legal risks appropriately.
  • Support the maintenance of effective legal governance processes and controls.

Dispute and Litigation Support

  • Manage dispute, litigation and external legal service providers.
  • Prepare documentation in support of disputes and litigation.
  • Manage dispute and litigation timelines and legal spend.

Governance and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate legal records and document management practices.
  • Prepare reports, legal summaries and updates as required.
  • Actively contribute to governance forums as required.
