Main purpose of position

  • The intern will gain practical experience in developing, producing and evaluating high-quality Afrikaans radio content, while learning to apply SABC editorial standards, understand RSG's audience and brand requirements, and work collaboratively across the various functions involved in delivering a national radio service.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with initiating and preparing content briefs, programme concepts and production specifications in line with RSG's programming strategy.
  • Assist with programme creation and development, including research, scripting, story development, interviews and production.
  • Prepare programme plans, promo scripts and other on-air creative content
  • Conduct research to identify relevant topics, stories, genres and content that are appropriate for RSG's Afrikaans audience.
  • Assist in developing fresh, creative and audience-relevant content while maintaining RSG's identity, values and quality standards.
  • Continually monitor and evaluate programme content to ensure that it meets agreed specifications, RSG standards and audience expectations.
  • Produce and record short documentaries, program inserts, music programs, sport reports, educational inserts and voice overs for daily and weekly programming
  • Ensure content is produced and presented in accordance with SABC Editorial Policies, RSG programming requirements and applicable broadcasting standards.
  • Apply sound editorial judgement and understand the principles of accuracy, fairness, balance, credibility and responsible broadcasting.
  • Assist with quality control of language, pronunciation, factual accuracy, tone and overall content execution.
  • Consider listener feedback and audience insights when developing and evaluating content.
  • Understand and protect RSG's brand identity and ensure that content contributes to the station's positioning as a trusted Afrikaans content hub.
  • Assist in identifying opportunities to extend radio content onto RSG's website, social media and other digital platforms.
  • Work collaboratively with presenters, producers, technical teams, marketing, digital and other relevant stakeholders in gathering, developing and presenting information.
  • Provide regular feedback to the Programme Manager/Senior Producer on content development, production progress and potential challenges.
  • Provide feedback to management on project and programme status and assist with tracking deadlines and deliverables.
  • Participate in programme meetings, editorial discussions, brainstorming sessions, outside broadcasts, station projects and audience engagement initiatives where applicable.
  • Develop professional skills in communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving, creativity and working within a fast-paced broadcasting environment.

INHERENT/ MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • National Diploma/Degree in Media studies, Journalism, Communications or relevant qualification NQF 6.
  • Knowledge and understanding of language of the station Afrikaans home language.
  • Understanding of the different role players within the media landscape.
  • Understanding of applicable legislative and media laws.
