Introduction

Our client is looking for the following candidate to join the core Infrastructure Engineering team within the Group IT Hub South Africa, driving the strategic Zero Trust Initiative.

This global transformation program establishes the future security architecture across the Group's international IT landscape.

Operating as an expert-level Infrastructure Engineer and regional best-practice industry leader, you will design, deploy, and operate secure, highly available, and scalable AWS cloud platform architectures, implementing Zero Trust principles across identity, connectivity, workspace, data, and security domains.

• AWS Cloud & Core Networking Mastery: Extensive hands-on experience using AWS as the primary cloud platform, combined with deep networking expertise (DNS, VPNs, load balancing, routing) and container orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes.

• IaC & Security Automation: Strong command of Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform), IaC security scanning tools (Checkov, tfsec), automated testing pipelines (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions), and enterprise security frameworks (IAM, RBAC, secrets management).

• Expert Technical Leadership: Best-practice industry leader capable of handling complex single-system and multi-system problems, negotiating tactical goals across cross-functional squads, and solving escalated tasks with no senior authority to defer to.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Zero Trust Platform Architecture: Design, implement, and support secure, scalable cloud infrastructure and platform capabilities, embedding Zero Trust controls across identity, network, and data domains.

• IaC & Security Automation: Automate infrastructure provisioning using Terraform and CI/CD tools. Build automated IaC validation tests, security scans, and secure deployment pipelines.

• Network & Container Orchestration: Build and maintain cloud networking, DNS, VPNs, and load balancers. Design and operate Kubernetes container platforms and CI/CD deployment flows.

• Observability & Operational Excellence: Instrument platform services with metrics, traces, and logs. Define SLOs, maintain dashboards/alerting, meet operational SLAs (availability, latency, MTTR), and participate in on-call rotations.

• Troubleshooting & Continuous Improvement: Perform root cause analysis on production incidents and implement long-term fixes. Drive continuous improvements in platform reliability, security posture, and automation coverage.

• Technical Steering: Guide development and production teams, define platform integration standards, and resolve escalated tasks.

Qualifications & Experience

• Extensive hands-on experience (typically 6+ years) operating in cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or DevOps roles with strong AWS expertise.

• Proven track record designing and operating secure, scalable, highly available cloud platforms across networking, containers, security, and automation layers.

• Strong systems thinking, risk management, curiosity, and an absolute ownership mindset to drive technical topics to completion.

• Demonstrated experience operating inside structured Agile and DevOps delivery environments.

Essential Skills & Technologies

Cloud & Container Architecture

• Strong hands-on experience with AWS as the primary cloud provider.

• Deep knowledge of networking fundamentals: DNS, VPNs, load balancing, and routing topologies.

• Expertise with public cloud storage and compute provisioning, performance tuning, and scalability.

• Container technologies: Docker and Kubernetes for platform deployments.

IaC, Security & Observability

• Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) using Terraform and CI/CD automation tools (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions).

• IaC security scanning (Checkov, tfsec), automated IaC testing (unit tests, plan/apply validations), and secure pipeline design.

• Strong competence in security controls: IAM, RBAC, secrets management, and security frameworks.

• Instrumenting monitoring and observability solutions: Grafana, Prometheus, Azure Monitor, and Application Insights.

• API integration: building, consuming, and improving interfaces across platform components.

Advantageous Skills

• Practical experience with Microsoft Azure and its platform services.

• Scripting/automation capabilities using Java or Python.

• Knowledge of database query languages and NoSQL/data stores.

• Exposure to message-based platforms (Kafka) and enterprise systems infrastructure (SAP).

• Container orchestration patterns, Helm charts, and GitOps workflows.

• Understanding of secret and certificate lifecycle management at scale.

• Storage performance tuning, cost optimization, high-availability design patterns, and disaster recovery strategies.

• Serverless platforms (Lambda, Azure Functions) for event-driven workloads.
