To obtain experiential learning through a structured 24 month programme applicable to the field of Industrial Engineering this dual-focused internship offers hands-on experience in optimizing operational processes and workflows while ensuring strict adherence to workplace Health & Safety (SHE/HSE) standards. This opportunity will afford a graduate exposure to the working world whilst earning regulated benefits as per the discretionary of the company.
Duties & Responsibilities
Industrial Engineering Tasks
1. Collect Operational Data, analyse it and make conclusions to solve problems.
2. Use the data to identify improvement projects.
3. Organise and lead workshop meetings for Must Haves (5s, Visual Management, People skills, ROM)
4. Implement 5s on site.
5. Implementing Visual Management tools in the sections.
6. Implementing small scale projects and following up on action plans.
7. Assist in the assessment process of the site.
8. Coaching workers on work instructions.
9. Engage the workforce to buy into the process of Continuous Improvement.
Health & Safety Tasks
Conduct Training- train staff wrt COP’s, SOP’s, Risk Assessments and PTO’s.
Create a culture of safety through communication, i.e. monthly safety topics, safety meetings, safety statistics, update safety notice boards, safety alerts, safety signs, etc.
Ensure that legal health & safety appointments (e.g. safety reps, subordinate managers, fire marshals, etc.) and Health & Safety Organogram are kept up to date.
Do safety inspections weekly and report to mine engineer/mine manager.
Give induction to all employees and contractors that report to the mine.
Ensure that contractor documentation for appointment / authorization by the mine engineer is in place.
Does risk assessment with safety reps, and head of departments.
Investigate incidents and accidents (incl. assisting the Inspector of Mines) and report to mine engineer/mine manager and communicate to safety reps.
Set up workplace inspection and planned task observation rosters and assist with doing these observations.
Set up rosters and audit legal registers (e.g. ladders, electrical equipment, lifting equipment, etc.) and report to mine engineer/mine manager.
Set up rosters and arrange exercises (e.g. evacuation drills) for emergency preparedness and response.
Assist and ensure that safety reps do their weekly inspections and tasks assigned to them during Health & Safety Committee meetings.
Participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensure that minutes of meetings are timeously distributed to safety reps.
Maintain the company’s Health & Safety Management System by reporting non-compliance to procedures and documentation to the mine engineer/mine manager.
