Health & Safety Intern
Johannesburg, Gauteng
We are seeking a motivated and safety-conscious Health & Safety Intern to support the implementation, administration and monitoring of workplace health and safety practices. The successful candidate will gain practical experience in safety inspections, risk assessments, incident reporting, and compliance documentation and employee safety awareness.
This opportunity is suitable for a recent graduate who would like to develop practical experience within Occupational Health and Safety.
Key Responsibilities
Assist with implementing and maintaining workplace health and safety policies, procedures and standards.
Conduct routine workplace safety inspections under the guidance of the Health & Safety team.
Assist with identifying workplace hazards and recommending appropriate corrective actions.
Support the completion and maintenance of risk assessments.
Assist with recording and investigating workplace incidents, accidents and near misses.
Maintain accurate Health & Safety files, registers, checklists and compliance documentation.
Assist with compiling Health & Safety reports and statistics.
Monitor corrective actions arising from inspections, audits and incidents.
Assist with toolbox talks, safety briefings and employee awareness initiatives.
Support emergency preparedness activities, including evacuation drills and emergency procedures.
Assist with monitoring the availability and correct use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Participate in Health & Safety meetings and assist with meeting administration and minutes.
Assist with internal Health & Safety audits and compliance checks.
Support compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable workplace regulations.
Assist with contractor Health & Safety documentation where required.
Perform general Health & Safety administration and other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Safety Management, Environmental Health, SHEQ Management or a related qualification.
Recent graduate seeking practical workplace experience.
Basic knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and workplace safety principles.
Computer literacy, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Good written and verbal communication skills.
Strong administrative and organisational abilities.
Good attention to detail.
