Introduction

Assist the Site Manager to comply with the MH&S act by identifying hazards, eliminate minimise or control risks relating to health and safety at the time. To obtain experiential learning through a structured 24 month programme. This opportunity will afford a graduate exposure to the working world whilst earning regulated benefits as per the discretionary of Imerys. These include an all-inclusive stipend.

Duties & Responsibilities

Conduct Training- train staff wrt COP’s, SOP’s, Risk Assessments and PTO’s.

Create a culture of safety through communication, i.e. monthly safety topics, safety meetings, safety statistics, update safety notice boards, safety alerts, safety signs, etc.

Ensure that legal health & safety appointments (e.g. safety reps, subordinate managers, fire marshals, etc.) and Health & Safety Organogram are kept up to date.

Do safety inspections weekly and report to mine engineer/mine manager.

Give induction to all employees and contractors that report to the mine.

Ensure that contractor documentation for appointment / authorization by the mine engineer is in place.

Do risk assessment with safety reps, and head of departments.

Investigate incidents and accidents (incl. assisting the Inspector of Mines)  and report to mine engineer/mine manager and communicate to safety reps.

Set up workplace inspection and planned task observation rosters and assist with doing these observations.

Set up rosters and audit legal registers (e.g. ladders, electrical equipment, lifting equipment, etc.) and report to mine engineer/mine manager.

Set up rosters and arrange exercises (e.g. evacuation drills) for emergency preparedness and response.

Assist and ensure that safety reps do their weekly inspections and tasks assigned to them during Health & Safety Committee meetings.

Participate in Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensure that minutes of meetings are timeously distributed to safety reps.

Maintain the company’s Health & Safety Management System by reporting non-compliance to procedures and documentation to the mine engineer/mine manager.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Grade 12/ Matric.

Degree or Diploma in Health and Safety Management.

Computer literacy.

Strong verbal and written English communication.

Analytical skills, report writing skills and decision making skills.

Attention to detail.

No previous internship contract experience.

Must be unemployed. (MQA requirement)

Historically disadvantaged South African.(MQA requirement)

Unendorsed driver's Licence.
