Requirements

  • Senior/National Senior Certificate Grade 12 and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, plus MMed in Radiation Oncology or FC Rad Oncology SA. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Radiation Oncology with minimum of five 5 years appropriate experience as a Medical Specialist in Radiation Oncology. Extensive and appropriate experience in all aspects of Radiation Oncology - clinical care, teaching, and research.
  • Proven management ability, sound communicationverbal and written skills, leadership skills, decision making and interpersonal skills. Proof of current registration with the HPCSA from 01 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. The candidate should be able to demonstrate the following skills: problem solving ,decision making, strong leadership, sound communication. Experience in teaching and learning, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students. This is a joint appointment between the University of Pretoria Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Radiation Oncology and Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

Duties

  • Radiotherapy Planning & Protocol Enforcement: Oversee the clinical implementation of advanced modalities e.g., 3D-CRT, IMRT, VMAT, Brachytherapy, and Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Establish, audit, and update departmental protocols based on local and international oncology guidelines.
  • Multi-Disciplinary Team MDT Leadership: Chair or lead tumor boards and MDT meetings with medical oncologists, surgical specialists, pathologists, and radiologists to manage complex cancer cases.
  • Quality Assurance Coordination: Partner with the Head of Medical Physics and Radiation Therapy Radiographers to execute strict daily/weekly clinical quality assurance QA protocols on linear accelerators Linacs and planning software. Resource and Equipment Management: Manage the clinical waitlist and optimize machine utilization to mitigate backlogs. Advise facility management on procurement specifications for high-tech capital equipment e.g. newer Linacs, CT simulators.
  • Training and Supervision: Actively manage the teaching and training curriculum for Registrars Radiation Oncology, Medical Physicists, and Oncology Nurses. Supervise post-graduate MMed research dissertations. Service Outreach: Coordinate provincial oncology referral channels, ensuring tertiary support systems flow correctly from regional health.
