Our client in the Durban Maydonwharf area is looking for general workers with stevedoring experience. Experience working in the port with breakbulk is a must and non-negotiable. The general worker is responsible for executing physical labor tasks related to loading, unloading, and securing cargo on both the quayside and vessels at Durban Port. This role requires a strong understanding of stevedoring procedures, port safety regulations, and the ability to work effectively under varied weather conditions and shift structures.
Duties & Responsibilities
Vessel Operations
Cargo Handling: Assist in the safe loading and discharging of various cargo types (breakbulk, containers, bulk, or project cargo) between the vessel and quayside.
Lashing and Securing: Apply and remove container lashings, twistlocks, bridge fittings, and chains securely according to the vessel's cargo plan.
Hatch & Deck Preparation: Open, close, and clear vessel hatch covers, pontoons, and battens safely under the direction of the supervisor or ship's crew.
Signaling: Act as a banksman or signaler to crane and winch operators when required, ensuring clear communication lines.
Quayside Operations
Rigging Support: Hook and unhook cargo from shore cranes, mobile cranes, and ships' gear using appropriate slings, shackles, and lifting equipment.
Cargo Sorting & Stacking: Move, sort, stack, and unstack goods on the wharf or within designated port terminal zones.
Housekeeping: Maintain high standards of cleanliness on the quayside, vessel decks, and work areas to eliminate tripping and operational hazards.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years of practical experience in stevedoring or marine port operations.
Education: Grade 12 (Matric) certificate or equivalent is preferred.
Package & Remuneration
