We are seeking a reliable and hardworking General Worker to support the daily operations of a railway workshop. The successful candidate will assist with housekeeping, material handling, equipment preparation, and general workshop duties to ensure a safe, clean, and efficient working environment. This role requires physical fitness, a strong work ethic, and the ability to follow safety procedures and instructions.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform general housekeeping duties within the workshop, including cleaning work areas, floors, pits, and equipment.
- Assist artisans, technicians, and fitters with maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities.
- Load, unload, move, and store materials, tools, equipment, and spare parts.
- Prepare tools, equipment, and workstations before maintenance activities commence.
- Assist with the cleaning and servicing of railway components and workshop equipment.
- Operate basic hand tools and workshop equipment safely and correctly.
- Remove scrap materials and dispose of waste in accordance with company procedures.
- Assist with lifting and moving heavy components using appropriate lifting equipment under supervision.
- Support stock handling, receiving, and issuing of workshop materials.
- Conduct routine inspections of work areas and report hazards, defects, or unsafe conditions.
- Ensure compliance with workplace health, safety, and environmental regulations.
- Wear and maintain the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
- Assist during planned maintenance shutdowns and emergency repair work.
- Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Workshop Supervisor.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
Education
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.
- A relevant technical qualification will be advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum of 1–2 years' experience in an industrial, engineering, manufacturing, or railway workshop environment.
- Experience working with heavy machinery or railway equipment will be advantageous.
- Experience using hand and power tools.
Knowledge
- Basic understanding of workshop operations.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations.
- Understanding of housekeeping standards in an industrial environment.
- Basic knowledge of manual handling techniques.
- Familiarity with railway workshop practices is advantageous.

- Maintain a clean and hazard-free work environment.
