General Worker (Railway Workshop)- Gauteng

Introduction

We are seeking a reliable and hardworking General Worker to support the daily operations of a railway workshop. The successful candidate will assist with housekeeping, material handling, equipment preparation, and general workshop duties to ensure a safe, clean, and efficient working environment. This role requires physical fitness, a strong work ethic, and the ability to follow safety procedures and instructions.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Perform general housekeeping duties within the workshop, including cleaning work areas, floors, pits, and equipment.

• Assist artisans, technicians, and fitters with maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities.

• Load, unload, move, and store materials, tools, equipment, and spare parts.

• Prepare tools, equipment, and workstations before maintenance activities commence.

• Assist with the cleaning and servicing of railway components and workshop equipment.

• Operate basic hand tools and workshop equipment safely and correctly.

• Remove scrap materials and dispose of waste in accordance with company procedures.

• Assist with lifting and moving heavy components using appropriate lifting equipment under supervision.

• Support stock handling, receiving, and issuing of workshop materials.

• Conduct routine inspections of work areas and report hazards, defects, or unsafe conditions.

• Ensure compliance with workplace health, safety, and environmental regulations.

• Wear and maintain the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.

• Assist during planned maintenance shutdowns and emergency repair work.

• Perform any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Workshop Supervisor.

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

Education

• Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.

• A relevant technical qualification will be advantageous.

Experience

• Minimum of 1–2 years' experience in an industrial, engineering, manufacturing, or railway workshop environment.

• Experience working with heavy machinery or railway equipment will be advantageous.

• Experience using hand and power tools.

Knowledge

• Basic understanding of workshop operations.

• Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations.

• Understanding of housekeeping standards in an industrial environment.

• Basic knowledge of manual handling techniques.

• Familiarity with railway workshop practices is advantageous.
