Our client, a well-established group supplying technical goods and services across Africa, is seeking an experienced General Procurement Manager to manage and grow the General Procurement category within its Technical Business Unit.
The successful candidate must come from a technical industry background, specifically Oil & Gas, Mining and/or Construction, and have proven management and staff supervisory experience.
This is a senior, hands-on role requiring strong commercial, procurement, supplier-management and business-development capabilities. The position involves interaction with both local and international clients and suppliers, as well as regular travel into
African countries.
Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Management & Business Development
- Manage and develop existing client relationships
- Identify new business opportunities and contribute to the continued growth of the Technical Business Unit
- Research target markets, industries and prospective clients
- Prepare client-specific commercial and technical proposals
- Conduct local and international business trips, including travel throughout Africa, to develop and maintain client relationships and market share
- Source new suppliers and products locally and internationally
- Establish and maintain strong supplier relationships
- Negotiate favourable commercial terms with suppliers
- Develop and implement strategic plans for the growth of the General Procurement category
Procurement & Operations
- Oversee the General Procurement function and ensure appropriate policies, procedures and operational controls are followed
- Manage the accurate and timely preparation of commercial and technical proposals
- Review client specifications and ensure appropriate supplier and product selection
- Monitor product quality, pricing, margins and overall commercial viability
- Oversee the expediting of orders to ensure deadlines and client expectations are met
- Work closely with the Logistics Department to ensure successful order fulfilment
- Resolve supplier and client claims and maintain the department in good standing
- Remain hands-on in the preparation of proposals, sourcing and expediting of orders when required
Staff & Performance Management
- Manage and supervise the General Procurement team
- Allocate and monitor staff workloads and responsibilities
- Monitor productivity, turnaround times, efficiency, accuracy and quality of work
- Conduct regular performance and activity reviews
- Develop the skills and competence of team members
- Assist with and conduct staff performance appraisals
- Provide leadership, guidance and support to the procurement team
- Ensure departmental objectives, deadlines and service standards are consistently achieved
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience within procurement, category management, technical supply, commercial management or a related field
- Previous experience within the Oil & Gas, Mining and/or Construction industry is essential
- Proven experience working in a management position
- Demonstrated experience supervising and managing staff, including allocating workloads, monitoring performance and developing team members
- Strong procurement and supplier-management experience
- Experience sourcing products and suppliers both locally and internationally
- Strong commercial acumen with proven negotiation skills
- Experience dealing with international clients and suppliers
- Must currently reside in Cape Town or the immediate surrounding area
- Valid passport is essential
- Must be willing and able to travel into African countries as required, including approximately one week of travel per month
- Fluent in English
- Must additionally be able to speak French or Portuguese
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strategic thinker with sound business acumen
- Strong organisational, project-management and time-management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to strict deadlines
- Strong relationship-building and client-management abilities
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be an experienced Procurement / Category Manager from an Oil & Gas, Mining or Construction environment who is comfortable operating across African markets. They will have strong leadership experience, international sourcing exposure and the ability to manage both the commercial and operational sides of a procurement division.
The candidate must be comfortable managing staff, dealing with senior clients and suppliers, negotiating internationally and travelling regularly into African countries.
