BACKGROUND

The Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria is internationally recognised for its excellence in the education of health care professionals. The faculty is committed to advancing cutting edge-research and transforming teaching and learning in response to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4 IR) with the aim of preparing and graduating a new generation of highly skilled, innovative and future ready health care professionals. The coursework offered by the faculty combines academic and practical skills and embraces innovation.

The Faculty's course work combines rigorous academic knowledge with practical and experiential learning, while embracing innovation, technology and emerging approaches to health sciences education. Its academic curricula, research activities, and community engagement initiatives not only address the diverse needs of local communities but also help shape and drive international endeavours and debates. The faculty has 4 Schools: School of Medicine, School of Dentistry, School of Health Care Sciences and School of Health Systems and Public Health. It is one of the most comprehensive Health Sciences faculties in South Africa, with 43 academic departments, and several specialised research centres and institutes. The faculty offers 10 undergraduate and 213 postgraduate programmes/ qualifications.

The Faculty Manager provides strategic and operational management support to the Faculty, ensuring the effective and efficient coordination of financial, human resource, administrative, facilities and operational functions. The role supports the Dean and Faculty leadership in achieving the Faculty's strategic objectives, promoting good governance, effective resource utilisation, stakeholder engagement and the successful implementation of institutional priorities and projects.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing and coordinating strategic and administrative support to the office of the Dean;
  • Providing strategic and operational management support to the Faculty and the Dean;
  • Developing, implementing and monitoring Faculty operational plans in alignment with institutional strategy;
  • Managing and overseeing the Faculty operational budget, financial planning, expenditure and reporting;
  • Managing faculty administration and operational processes, ensuring efficiency, compliance and continuous improvement;
  • Overseeing facilities, infrastructure, maintenance and operational requirements, including coordination of capital projects where applicable;
  • Ensuring effective occupational health and safety practices and compliance within the Faculty;
  • Leading and coordinating projects and strategic initiatives, ensuring delivery within agreed timelines, budgets and quality standards;
  • Developing and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including university management, professional services, staff, students and relevant external partners.
  • Providing management information, reports and analysis to support informed decision-making by the Dean and Faculty leadership;
  • Ensuring compliance with institutional policies, procedures, governance requirements and relevant legislation;
  • Identifying operational risks and implement appropriate risk mitigation and control measures;
  • Driving process improvement, service excellence and operational efficiency across the Faculty;
  • Supporting the Faculty in achieving its strategic, academic and operational objectives;
  • Leading, managing and developing administrative and support staff within the Faculty.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • A relevant Honours degree (NQF Level 8) in Management, Business Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Public Administration or a related field.
  • At least 6 years' experience in financial and general administration, with 2 years at middle management level in a higher education environment or a comparable complex organisation.
  • Demonstrated management responsibility across human resources, finance, facilities and operations.
  • Proven experience managing a complex, multi-building campus or large multi-site estate, including facilities, infrastructure, maintenance and capital projects.
  • At least 3 years' experience in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management.
  • Proven experience in strategic planning, financial management, stakeholder management and complex project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and deliver strategic initiatives while managing multiple stakeholders and competing priorities.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES)

  • Sound general management and leadership capability, including strong people management and change management skills;
  • Strategic, analytical and systems-thinking ability, with sound judgement and practical problem-solving skills;
  • Financial acumen, high-level planning and project-management capability;
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, negotiation and conflict-management skills;
  • High level of computer and information literacy;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure, meet demanding deadlines and attend to detail;
  • Willingness and ability to work outside normal operating hours when required.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES

  • A relevant Master's degree in Management, Business Administration, Finance, Human Resources, Public Administration or a related field.
  • Experience in a higher education environment.
  • Experience in managing complex faculty operations, finance, human resources and facilities.
  • Knowledge of higher education governance, policies and regulatory frameworks.
  • Experience in strategic planning and implementation.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
