FACTORY FLOOR SUPERVISOR

Introduction

Supervise daily factory floor operations in a facility manufacturing moulded plastic containers and lids for margarine, yoghurt and other food products. Ensure production targets are achieved safely and efficiently while maintaining product quality, hygiene standards and effective staff performance.

Duties & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Production and Workflow

• Plan and allocate daily tasks to machine operators, packers and general workers according to the production schedule.

• Monitor production output, machine utilisation, downtime and material wastage, taking corrective action where necessary.

• Coordinate production start-ups, product changes and shift handovers to minimise interruptions.

• Ensure raw materials, packaging materials and finished goods are correctly identified, handled and recorded.

Staff Supervision

• Supervise attendance, timekeeping, work allocation and adherence to operating procedures.

• Conduct shift briefings and train employees on safe working practices, quality requirements and housekeeping.

• Address performance concerns and escalate disciplinary matters through the appropriate management channels.

Quality and Food-Packaging Hygiene

• Ensure containers and lids meet specifications for appearance, dimensions, weight, fit and finish.

• Identify defects such as cracks, contamination, distortion and incomplete moulding; isolate non-conforming products and report recurring issues.

• Enforce hygiene, contamination-prevention and traceability procedures appropriate to food contact packaging.

• Work with the quality team to resolve defects and prevent repeat problems

Machinery, Safety and Housekeeping

• Monitor moulding machinery and auxiliary equipment, reporting faults promptly to maintenance.

• Coordinate with setters and technicians on machine adjustments and mould changes.

• Ensure employees follow machine guarding, PPE and authorised isolation procedures.

• Maintain clean, organised work areas and report hazards, incidents and unsafe practices immediately.

Reporting and Stock Control

• Maintain accurate shift records covering output, rejects, downtime, material usage and staffing.

• Report production shortfalls, quality concerns and maintenance requirements to management.

• Support stock control and ensure finished products are packed, labelled and transferred correctly

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Requirements

• Matric / Grade 12.

• At least three years’ manufacturing experience, including one to two years in a supervisory or team-leader role.

• Practical understanding of production processes, common moulding defects and factory safety.

• Ability to interpret production schedules, product specifications and basic production reports.

• Basic computer literacy and sound numeracy.

• Willingness to work shifts and overtime when required.

Advantageous

• Experience manufacturing food-contact plastic containers and lids.

• Relevant qualification in production management, plastics processing or a technical field.

• Exposure to injection moulding, thermoforming or similar plastic packaging processes.

• Experience with documented quality systems and good manufacturing practices.

Package & Remuneration

R10 000– R15 000 (depending on experience)
