The Erlang Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining high-throughput, low-latency, and fault-tolerant distributed systems. Operating at the heart of enterprise backend communications, real-time messaging, and high-concurrency event platforms, this professional acts as a key technical contributor who engineers resilient services capable of continuous operation. The position requires a functional programming practitioner with strong problem-solving skills, a deep understanding of OTP behaviors, and a data-driven approach to system performance, memory management, and concurrency.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain high-concurrency, fault-tolerant, and distributed backend applications using Erlang/OTP.
- Design and implement lightweight process architectures, supervision trees, and state management actors using gen_server, gen_statem, and custom OTP behaviors.
- Build, optimize, and secure low-latency network communication protocols (TCP/UDP, WebSockets, gRPC, REST, and custom binary protocols).
- Diagnose, debug, and resolve performance bottlenecks, memory leaks, and process deadlocks using Erlang tracing and telemetry tools (such as observer, recon, and redbug).
- Integrate distributed data stores, in-memory databases, and message brokers (e.g., Mnesia, ETS/DETS, Redis, Apache Kafka, RabbitMQ).
- Drive zero-downtime application updates using Erlang code hot-swapping and rolling upgrade releases.
- Own code quality, test coverage, and documentation, conducting peer code reviews and writing robust unit and integration tests using EUnit and Common Test.
- Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, providing precise technical estimations, story point sizing, and clear execution pathways during sprint planning.
- Containerize applications and automate deployment pipelines across cloud infrastructure utilizing Docker, Kubernetes, Rebar3, and CI/CD automation tools.
- Partner with DevOps teams to set up real-time monitoring, metric collection, and alerting for distributed nodes across multi-datacenter setups.
Desired Experience & Qualification
- National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- A minimum of 5 years of commercial software engineering experience, with at least 3 years of dedicated hands-on Erlang development on production-grade systems.
- Professional experience working with functional programming paradigms, BEAM ecosystem languages (Erlang, Elixir), or actor-model frameworks.
- Experience in Telecommunications, FinTech, Gaming, or High-Volume Media domains will be highly advantageous.
- Deep structural knowledge of OTP design principles, supervisors, application structures, release management with Rebar3, and distributed BEAM node communication.
- Advanced proficiency with distributed storage engines (Mnesia, ETS, DETS) and distributed consensus architectures.
- Solid grasp of Linux systems, network programming, socket tuning, and containerized deployment workflows (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Hands-on experience with automated test suites (EUnit, Common Test) and property-based testing concepts (Proper, QuickCheck).
- Advanced proficiency navigating, customizing, and generating insights from enterprise tracking ecosystems.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication capability, with a proven track record of translating complex distributed systems constraints into clear summaries for non-technical stakeholders.
