Engineering Design & Internal Sales

Introduction

The Engineering Designer & Internal Sales Representative is responsible for converting customer requirements, sketches, samples and specifications into accurate and practical product designs suitable for quotation and manufacture.

The position has a strong design and technical focus, including preparing and modifying basic CAD and Excel-based drawings, product specifications and calculations. The role also includes internal sales functions such as handling customer enquiries, preparing quotations, processing orders and providing technical product support.

The position acts as an important link between the customer, Sales, Technical and Production departments.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Engineering Designer's primary and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

The position’s duties include, but are not limited to

• Interpret customer requirements, specifications, sketches, samples and existing drawings.

• Prepare and modify basic CAD and Excel-based product/manufacturing drawings.

• Perform basic dimensional and electrical calculations required for product design.

• Ensure designs are technically correct, practical to manufacture and meet customer requirements.

• Maintain accurate drawings, revisions, specifications and other technical product information.

• Work with Production and Technical personnel to resolve design and manufacturing queries.

• Identify potential design or manufacturing problems and assist in finding practical solutions.

• Respond to customer enquiries and provide technical product advice and support.

• Prepare and follow up on quotations, pricing and lead times.

• Process customer orders and ensure that technical and commercial information is complete and accurate.

• Liaise with Production, Stores and Purchasing regarding feasibility, lead times and material availability.

• Maintain accurate quotation, order and customer information on the company ERP system.

• Assist the external sales team with drawings, quotations, technical information and customer support.

• Maintain professional customer relationships and provide appropriate feedback regarding orders and enquiries.

• Comply with company policies, procedures and quality requirements.

Requirements

The following are the minimum requirements to perform the jobs tasks adequately:

• Good technical aptitude and problem-solving ability.

• Ability to read, interpret and prepare basic technical drawings.

• Basic working knowledge of CAD software for preparing and modifying 2D drawings.

• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including basic calculations and Excel-based drawings.

• Basic understanding of electrical and mechanical principles.

• Ability to convert customer requirements into practical product designs and specifications.

• Good understanding of dimensions, measurements and tolerances.

• Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.

• Good communication and customer service skills.

• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Ability to work effectively with Sales, Technical and Production personnel.

• Valid driver’s licence and own transport.

Beneficial Experience

The following experience will be beneficial for this position

• Experience in a design, draughting, technical sales or manufacturing environment.

• Experience with electrical or industrial products.

• Experience using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or similar CAD software.

• Experience preparing manufacturing drawings and specifications.

• Knowledge of basic electrical calculations and manufacturing processes.

• Experience using ERP or quotation/order-processing systems.

Qualifications

Language:               English literate – able to read, write and communicate effectively.

Education:               Minimum technical schooling, national diploma or equivalent. A qualification in mechanical, electrical,  draughting or a related technical field will be advantageous.
