Introduction

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To participate with the Avionic Systems Engineering team mainly with Control System tasks which has the following responsibilities for all development projects:

  • Specification on the current contracted programme or R&D task.
  • Development on the current contracted programme or R&D task.
  • Verification on the current contracted programme or R&D task.
  • Certification on the current contracted programme or R&D task.
  • Support other team members in preparing requirements, designs and verification on the current contracted programme or R&D tasks.
  • Current contracted product support tasks.
  • Skills development in support of the currently contracted programme or R&D task.

To develop and maintain reliable and efficient system solutions that meets the defined requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities

Systems Engineering

  • Transform user’s needs into technical requirements.
  • Develop project’s Statement of Work for the development phase.
  • Develop System specifications.
  • Populate and maintain a project’s Requirements database.
  • Perform System Interface control management.
  • Oversee implementation and development process of the system.
  • Perform System verification and qualification testing.

System Specification

  • Participate in the development of system specifications (requirements and/or designs), based on department manager, project team leader or system engineering supplied product/project requirements, using company system specification procedures.
  • Participate in the development of system requirements based on the system specifications.

System Design and Architecture

  • Design system architecture based on system requirements and guided by the system safety analysis.
  • Design system based on system requirements, using company hardware development procedures.

Hardware/Firmware Development

  • Develop system based on team leader or system engineering supplied requirements, using company hardware development procedures.
  • Implement hardware designs to support required application data requirements/design.
  • Implement firmware to support required application data requirements/design.
  • Document all low-level implementation/designs in accordance with company procedures.
  • Functionally test developed hardware and code against requirements by using project/company testing and verification procedures.

System Verification and Testing

  • Execute verification methods/tests, based on department manager, project team leader or system engineering supplied product/project verification procedures.

Certification

  • Participate in preparing certification evidence, based on department manager, project team leader or system engineering supplied product/project requirements, using company hardware certification procedures.

Support

  • Assist other members of the Avionic Systems Engineering department with document reviews, design reviews and system architecture reviews for the programmes under development within the department.
  • Assist department manager in evaluation and selection of specification/ Verification tools.
  • Support current and contracted programs and projects.

Skills Development

  • Participate in programme related skills development activities.
  • Participate in the mentoring of junior department/project personnel.
  • Implementation of DO254/DO178C objectives.
  • Knowledge of selected avionic system components.
  • Develop team leadership skills.
  • Develop presentation skills.
  • Develop solid understanding of airborne Control systems.

People and Transformation

  • Participate in the performance management process
  • Participate in staff meetings as and when required to discuss operational performance and business issues
  • Attend scheduled courses

Desired Experience & Qualification

Minimum Qualifications and Certifications

  • B. Eng in Electrical Engineering (Electronics) or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • Adequate engineering knowledge equivalent to NQF 8.

Ideal

  • Knowledge of Avionics systems and architectures.
  • Knowledge and experience in Flight Dynamics.
  • Practical experience in development and design.
  • Experience within Aerospace, Defence or safety-critical development environments.
  • Knowledge of airworthiness standards (RTCA DO254, RTCA DO178C, ARP4754A).
  • Familiarity with avionics communication and data bus standards (ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, CAN bus, Ethernet)
  • Knowledge of project management principles.

Minimum Experience

  • 5 years experience in System Development
  • 5 years experience in System Engineering
  • Theoretical and practical background in Control Systems engineering.

Training and Knowledge

  • Product design, development, verification and certification knowledge.
  • Feedback loops, and autopilot or flight management integration.
  • Thorough knowledge of engineering procedures and standards.
  • Proficiency with modelling and simulation software (MATLAB, Simulink)
  • Experience in requirements management.
