Maxwell+Spark is a multinational Greentech company with primary offices in Durban, South Africa, and Rotterdam, The Netherlands. We help industrial users reduce energy costs and carbon emissions through lithium-ion energy storage and power electronics.
We’re looking for an Electronic Engineer to join our multidisciplinary engineering team in Durban. You’ll design, develop and support electronics for our battery systems, working closely with Product Owners and colleagues across engineering, fabrication and production. You’ll be supported by a senior engineer and contribute across the product lifecycle, from early design through testing, certification and continuous improvement.
Duties & Responsibilities
What you’ll do
Design circuits, schematics and PCB layouts for battery products and components.
Develop embedded firmware for microcontroller-based systems.
Build, test and troubleshoot prototypes; document results and iterate designs.
Support product certification activities, including UL 2580, UL 583 and CE, by preparing test evidence and technical documentation.
Work with fabrication and production teams to support prototype builds and resolve design issues.
Prepare component specifications and coordinate with suppliers and fabricators.
Analyse product and test data, report findings, and recommend design improvements.
Manage assigned engineering projects to agreed time, cost, quality and technical requirements.
Maintain clear, accurate and traceable engineering records, including design outputs, test results, revisions and changes.
Support After Sales and Production activities as needed, expected to be less than 10% of the role.
Desired Experience & Qualifications
Skills and Qualifications
A BSc in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent qualification; an MSc is an advantage.
Practical experience in circuit design, PCB layout and circuit simulation.
Experience developing embedded firmware for microcontrollers.
Confidence testing and troubleshooting electronic systems, analysing results and communicating findings.
Clear written and verbal communication, including the ability to produce useful technical documentation.
A valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel occasionally.
Experience
- 3 to 6 years of relevant engineering experience.
Useful experience
These are advantageous, but not essential
CAN (Controller Area Network) communications.
Energy storage systems, power electronics or battery management systems (BMS).
EMI/EMC design, testing or compliance.
Git and Azure.
