Duties & Responsibilities

JOB DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE

To install, maintain, repair and optimise all electrical infrastructure and equipment on the property, ensuring safe, reliable and energy-efficient operation of hotel facilities in full compliance with SANS 10142 and Occupational Health and Safety legislation, in support of a premium guest experience.

• Ensure all electrical installations, distribution boards and circuits across guest rooms, conference facilities, kitchens, spa, plant rooms and outdoor areas operate safely and reliably at all times.

• Minimise equipment downtime by applying structured preventative maintenance and prompt fault response, aligned with the hotel's operational requirements and guest service standards.

• Maintain full statutory compliance with South African electrical installation regulations (including SANS 10142-1) and internal health and safety policies, enabling the hotel to meet legal, insurance and audit requirements.

• Support the Facilities Manager in planning, implementing and documenting electrical upgrades, refurbishments and energy-efficiency initiatives across the property.

• Provide professional, courteous service to internal stakeholders (operations, housekeeping, F&B, spa, front office) to ensure that electrical issues do not negatively impact guests.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Routinely inspect electrical systems, including wiring, distribution boards, fixtures, sockets, lighting, control panels and appliances in all buildings and external areas of the estate.

• Identify electrical faults, hazards and non-compliant installations, assess associated risks, and implement corrective actions or escalate to the Facilities Manager where required.

• Troubleshoot system failures and breakdowns on equipment such as HVAC units, pumps, kitchen equipment, laundry machines, boilers, spa and pool systems, and lighting controls.

• Read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics and layouts to understand wiring placement and load distribution, and update documentation where modifications are made.

• Test electrical systems and components using appropriate test instruments (e.g., multimeters, insulation testers, continuity testers, earth loop testers) to verify functionality and safety.

• Perform corrective and preventative maintenance on electrical fixtures and equipment, including repair or replacement of wiring, luminaires, control gear, sockets, circuit breakers, isolators and associated hardware.

• Install new electrical equipment and infrastructure as required (lighting, plugs, small power, appliances, motors, control panels, cable routes and trunking), ensuring neat workmanship and compliance with hotel standards.

• Respond timeously to maintenance tickets and fault requests generated by operations, front office, housekeeping and other departments, prioritizing guest-impact issues.

• Monitor power usage and report abnormal consumption, recurring faults or capacity constraints, suggesting improvements or upgrades to the Facilities Manager.

• Support generator, UPS and emergency power systems testing and operation, including load tests, change-over checks and fuel-related coordination, as applicable to the property.

• Ensure that all electrical work complies with SANS 10142 and OHS Act requirements, and that only approved materials and components are used.

• Maintain accurate maintenance records, job cards, test results, asset registers and electrical maintenance reports as required by the Facilities Manager and auditors.

• Assist with general maintenance tasks in other trades (basic plumbing, carpentry, painting) when operationally required and within competence.

• Maintain tools, instruments and workshop areas in a safe, clean and serviceable condition, and arrange repairs or replacements when necessary.

• Adhere at all times to hotel safety, security and environmental procedures, including lock-out/tag-out, use of PPE, permit-to-work, emergency procedures and safe work practices.

• Provide input into capital and operational budgets for electrical maintenance and projects, including spares, tools, equipment and contractor costs.

• Supervise and quality-check work carried out by external electrical contractors when required, ensuring minimal disruption to hotel operations and guests.

• Perform standby duties, work shifts, overtime, weekends and public holidays as necessary to meet operational and guest service requirements.

• Carry out any related duties assigned by the Facilities Manager that are reasonably within the scope of the role and skill set, in line with hotel needs.

Desired Experience & Qualification

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• National Senior Certificate (Matric) or equivalent (Essential)

• Recognised Trade Test / Red Seal as an Installation Electrician or equivalent trade certification, registered in South Africa

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED

• Minimum 3-5 years post-qualification experience as an electrician, preferably within a hotel, resort, hospitality, commercial or similar facilities environment.

• Demonstrated experience in installation, maintenance and repair of building electrical systems and equipment.

• Exposure to working in an operational environment with guests or customers on site, where work quality, safety and professionalism are critical.

• Solid understanding of low-voltage electrical systems, including single- and three-phase distribution, motor control, lighting, socket-outlet circuits and earthing/bonding principles.

• Working knowledge of South African Wiring Code SANS 10142-1 and related OHS Act requirements for electrical installations and maintenance.

• Familiarity with typical hotel plant and equipment: HVAC systems, boilers, circulation and booster pumps, commercial kitchen and laundry equipment, spa and pool systems, lighting control and emergency lighting.

• Basic knowledge of related maintenance disciplines (plumbing, carpentry, painting and general building maintenance) to support integrated facilities maintenance.

• Understanding of preventative maintenance principles, asset management and work-order systems within a hospitality or facilities environment.

• English proficiency (Essential).

• Proficient fault-finding, diagnostics and problem-solving skills on a wide variety of electrical systems and equipment.

• Competent use of electrical test instruments and hand/power tools (e.g., drills, grinders, crimpers, conduit benders, testers) in a safe and controlled manner.

• Ability to plan, sequence and execute electrical work neatly and efficiently, with attention to detail and adherence to standards.

• Capable of interpreting technical drawings, manuals and specifications, and applying them practically on site.

• Good written skills to complete job cards, reports and checklists, and basic computer literacy for maintenance systems and email.

• Effective verbal communication skills to interact with team members, contractors and operational departments.

• Physical stamina and strength to perform manual tasks, work at heights and in confined spaces as required.

• Reliable, responsible and self-disciplined, with a strong sense of ownership and pride in workmanship.
