Position Summary

  • We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Shaft Structural Engineer with specialist expertise in the design and execution of surface and underground mining infrastructure projects Greenfields and Brownfields environments to join our Mining Sector Practice. This role entails working with diverse teams, both locally, and abroad. This role reports directly into the Regoinal Director, Mining AIM.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for the structural analysis and design, assessment, and delivery of mining-related infrastructure across all project phases, including Concept Studies, Pre-Feasibility Studies PFS, Feasibility Studies FS, Execution Detail Design, Construction Support and Commissioning.
  • The role requires significant experience in the mining sector, with demonstrated capability in the design of heavy industrial structures, shaft and hoisting infrastructure, underground facilities, bulk material handling systems, processing plants, workshops, and associated mining infrastructure.
  • The candidate will work within multi-disciplinary project teams, and interface closely with mining, civil, mechanical, electrical, control & automation, process, geotechnical, ventilation, engineering management and project management disciplines.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • An established structural engineer who combines strong technical design capability with practical mining project experience and who can confidently deliver complex steel and reinforced concrete structures associated with deep-level underground mines, shaft complexes, process plants, materials handling systems, and heavy industrial facilities within a multidisciplinary consulting environment.

Prerequisites

  • 5-7 years' experience, with emphasis on the structural design of infrastructure related to the underground and surface mining operations, with particular emphasis on shaft-related infrastructure i.e. mining headgears and shaft steelwork systems
  • Registration as a Candidate Engineer with ECSA. Registration as a Professional Engineer with ECSA would be advantageous
  • BSc/B. Eng degree in Civil Engineering, with specialization in Structural Engineering. Master's Degree in Structural Engineering would be advantageous
  • In-depth knowledge and experience in designing structural concrete and structural steelwork. Knowledge of dynamic loading and analysis of structures would be advantageous
  • In-depth knowledge of structural software suites such as PROKON. Working knowledge of Strand 7 and STAAD Pro would be advantageous
  • Working knowledge of Bentley Projectwise and Open Buildings Designer Microstation would be advantageous

Responsibilities

The successful candidate shall be capable of

  • Developing structural design basis and criteria
  • Developing technical specifications for construction
  • Developing technical discipline documentation for enquiry and contract placement purposes related to contract or procurement packages – Scope of Work documents and Material Take-Off's MTO's. The candidate will also undertake the review of bid submissions, bid clarifications and shall undertake/ participate in the compilation of the Technical Evaluation and Recommendation TEAR
  • Developing structural designs from Concept Phase through to Execution
  • Undertaking structural analysis and design calculations, inclusive of compilation of design reports
  • Demonstrating a working knowledge of OHSA, MHSA and SANS codes. Working knowledge of international loading and structural design codes would be advantageous
  • Guiding structural/ mechanical designers with input and development of 3D models, and participation in 3D model reviews
  • Thoroughly reviewing structural drawings, and reviewing steelwork and platework workshop fabrication drawings
  • Undertaking intra-discipline and inter-discipline reviews and co-ordination
  • Participating in client meetings and engaging with Client discipline stakeholders to ensure that project scope and outcomes are met
  • Managing the structural discipline for Projects in terms of scope, budget, schedule and quality
  • Participating in Risk reviews HAZiD, HAZOP, Constructability Reviews and Risk Assessments
  • Conducting peer reviews and verification of designs
  • Mentoring and supervision of junior graduate engineers
  • Undertaking site inspections and condition assessment of structures inclusive of technical report writing
  • Participating in business development initiatives by assisting with development of man -hour estimates and input into tender bid documents
  • Resolving site technical field engineering queries and providing commissioning support
  • Review and approval of contractor submitted documentation
  • Attendance of fabrication workshop inspections for monitoring compliance with the design and quality requirements are met
  • Conducting periodic site inspections to ensure that construction and fabrication is conducted in accordance with the required SHEQ standards and contract execution documentation
