Training Officer (Driver Trainer) A leading logistics and transport organisation is seeking an experienced Training Officer to oversee driver training, assessments and compliance within a dangerous goods transport environment. The successful candidate will ensure drivers are appropriately trained, assessed and certified in line with legislative, TETA/QCTO and operational requirements, while promoting safe and compliant transport practices. Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom, yard-based and practical driver training and assessments.
- Conduct daily toolbox talks and DG safety briefings, covering placarding, segregation, PPE and emergency procedures.
- Conduct practical driver assessments and re-assessments in accordance with US 123259 and applicable standards.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to new and under-performing drivers.
- Verify driver compliance prior to dispatch, including PrDP-D, DG certification and medical fitness certificates.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections covering placards, orange diamonds, fire extinguishers, PPE, spill kits and DG documentation.
- Maintain accurate training registers, training matrices and electronic training records.
- Conduct incident and near-miss debriefs and implement corrective coaching where required.
- Monitor medical expiry dates and coordinate occupational medical examinations.
- Prepare and issue HAZCHEM/DG certificates for competent drivers.
- Conduct scheduled Planned Task Observations (PTOs) and follow up on corrective actions.
- Plan and coordinate weekly and monthly driver training programmes.
- Monitor training and compliance KPIs and compile regular management reports.
- Conduct DG refresher training, emergency response drills, spill response, firefighting and defensive driving training.
- Review and update training material in line with SANS standards, NRTA regulations and TETA/QCTO requirements.
- Conduct internal moderation of assessments and audit driver training files.
- Present training and compliance performance at relevant operational and SHEQ meetings.
Minimum Requirements
- Assessor Qualification – US 115753: Conduct Outcomes-Based Assessment (NQF 5).
- Registered Constituent Assessor with TETA or QCTO, with scope specifically covering US 123259 – essential.
- Facilitator Qualification – US 117871: Facilitate Learning Using a Variety of Given Methodologies (NQF 5).
- Personally competent in US 123259 or equivalent.
- Valid Code 14 (EC) driver's licence.
- Current PrDP-D (Professional Driving Permit – Dangerous Goods).
- Current Dangerous Goods (DG) training certificate.
- Minimum 2–3 years' practical experience within dangerous goods transport/logistics.
- Strong understanding of driver training, assessment and compliance requirements.
- Knowledge of TETA/QCTO, NLRD, QHSE and relevant transport legislation will be advantageous.

The ideal candidate will be a qualified and registered assessor with practical dangerous goods transport experience, strong driver training capabilities and a thorough understanding of regulatory compliance. You should be confident conducting both theoretical and practical training, assessing driver competency and maintaining high standards of safety and compliance.
