The Database Administrator (DBA) is responsible for supporting the Business Intelligence (BI) environment by maintaining reliable, secure, and high-performing database platforms that enable data warehouse operations, ETL processes, reporting datasets, dashboards, and operational analytics. The role provides hands-on operational support to ensure that database environments remain stable and available for successful ETL execution. Responsibilities include monitoring Microsoft SQL Server environments, supporting SQL Agent jobs, managing database security and access controls, performing backup and recovery validation, investigating database-related incidents, maintaining database objects required for ETL processing, and providing support for BI-related service requests and incidents.

What you’ll Be Cooking

1. Database Health Monitoring and Administration

  • Monitor SQL Server availability, performance, disk space utilisation, database growth, and system health indicators.
  • Track and investigate failed jobs, performance bottlenecks, and database alerts.
  • Perform routine database administration activities to maintain stable and reliable environments.
  • Escalate risks, recurring issues, and service-impacting incidents with clear impact assessments and supporting evidence.
  • Maintain and complete daily, weekly, and monthly database health checks and monitoring activities.

2. ETL and SQL Job Support

  • Support ETL Developers by monitoring SQL Agent jobs, SSIS executions, scheduled processes, and data refresh dependencies.
  • Investigate first-line ETL and database job failures by reviewing logs, source system availability, permissions, locking issues, and load sequence dependencies.
  • Assist with job reruns, validation activities, incident management, and escalation documentation.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of database objects required by ETL processes, including tables, views, and stored procedures.

3. Backup, Restore and Recovery Support

  • Perform routine verification of database backups and ensure successful completion according to agreed backup schedules.
  • Assist with restore testing and disaster recovery validation activities under supervision.
  • Maintain evidence and documentation of backup validation and recovery testing.
  • Monitor database maintenance plans and highlight failed or missed maintenance activities.

4. Security and Access Administration

  • Process database access requests and permission changes in accordance with approved security procedures.
  • Support periodic access reviews and audits.
  • Ensure all access changes are accurately documented and approved.
  • Identify and report orphaned accounts, excessive permissions, inactive users, and expired access requirements.
  • Promote sound database security practices and compliance with organisational policies.

5. Database Change and Deployment Support

  • Assist with the deployment of database scripts, stored procedures, views, and other database objects following change management processes.
  • Maintain deployment records, version references, implementation notes, and rollback documentation.
  • Support lower-environment refreshes, testing activities, and post-deployment validation checks.
  • Participate in change implementation activities under guidance from senior team members.

6. Documentation and Governance

  • Maintain accurate database administration, support, and operational documentation.
  • Ensure database configurations, procedures, environments, and support activities are appropriately documented.
  • Support adherence to governance, audit, security, and operational standards.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures and knowledge base content.

7. Operational Support and Continuous Improvement

  • Provide support for BI-related service requests and incidents, including:
  • Database access issues
  • Failed SQL Agent jobs
  • Data refresh failures
  • Database performance concerns
  • ETL-related database issues
  • Assist with root cause investigations and corrective actions.
  • Identify recurring manual activities and opportunities for automation, optimisation, and standardisation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives within the BI and data platform environment.

What You’ll Bring to the Table

  • National Diploma, B-Tech Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent qualification
  • 0 to 2 years of relevant database administration, BI support, data management, or IT support experience.
