Role Purpose
The Data Engineer is responsible for supporting the design, development, maintenance, and optimisation of the organisation's data pipelines and data infrastructure. The role focuses on ensuring that data is accurate, accessible, and reliable for reporting, analytics, and business decision-making.
Working under the guidance of senior data professionals, the Data Engineer will assist with integrating data from multiple sources, maintaining data quality, and supporting business users with data-related requirements.
The role also contributes to the continuous improvement of data engineering processes and technologies.
Scope
The Data Engineer operates within the Analytics team and collaborates with business stakeholders, Business Intelligence developers, analysts, and other technology teams.
The role is responsible for
- Supporting the development and maintenance of data pipelines.
- Assisting with data integration and transformation processes.
- Monitoring and maintaining data quality.
- Supporting business intelligence and analytics initiatives.
- Troubleshooting data-related issues.
- Contributing to continuous improvement of data engineering processes.
- Participating in projects ranging from small enhancements to larger business initiatives.
The role is expected to learn new technologies and contribute to building scalable, secure, and reliable data solutions that support business objectives.

Technical Skills
- Good understanding of SQL and relational databases
- Basic knowledge of Python or another scripting language
- Understanding of ETL/ELT processes
- Exposure to Microsoft BI stack (SQL Server, Power BI)
- Basic understanding of cloud platforms (Azure, AWS or GCP)
- Understanding of data quality principles
- Basic knowledge of data modelling concepts
- Ability to troubleshoot and resolve data issues
- Familiarity with version control and development best practices

Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering
- Assist with developing, maintaining, and enhancing data pipelines.
- Support the extraction, transformation, and loading (ETL/ELT) of data from multiple sources.
- Monitor data pipelines and resolve data processing issues.
- Assist in preparing datasets for reporting, analytics, and predictive modelling.
- Ensure data integrity, quality, consistency, and completeness.
Data Management
- Analyse, clean, organise, and transform raw data.
- Validate data received from internal and external sources.
- Maintain documentation of data processes and data flows.
- Assist in implementing data governance and quality standards.
Business Support
- Support business users with data-related queries and issues.
- Assist analysts and BI developers with sourcing and preparing data.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to understand business requirements.
- Participate in testing and validating data solutions.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate manual processes.
- Contribute ideas to improve data architecture and operational efficiency.
- Research emerging technologies relevant to data engineering.
- Support implementation of new tools and technologies where appropriate.
Operational Responsibilities
- Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve data issues.
- Monitor scheduled jobs and data loads.
- Maintain technical documentation.
- Prioritise assigned work to meet business deadlines.
- Perform administrative and ad hoc duties as required.
Desired Experience & Qualification
Minimum Requirements
Education(Essential)
- Matric / Grade 12
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in:
- Computer Science
- Information Systems
- Informatics
- Data Science
- Statistics
- Software Engineering
- or a related field
Advantageous
- Microsoft, Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud certifications
- SQL or Python certification
Experience(Essential)
- 1–3 years' experience in a Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, or related technical role.
- Experience writing SQL queries and working with relational databases.
- Exposure to ETL/ELT concepts and data integration.
- Experience working with reporting or BI platforms.
Advantageous
- Exposure to cloud data platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP).
- Exposure to Microsoft BI technologies.
- Exposure to data warehouse concepts.
- Contact centre or customer service industry experience.
