- Coordinating the day-to-day operations of interpreting services, including activities regarding the timetable.
- Ensuring quality interpreting by implementing quality-management structures and processes such as observation of interpreting sessions.
- Supervising the day-to-day financial administration related to interpreting services, including financial record-keeping, and assisting the Head of Language Services with annual budgeting.
- Together with the Head, liaising with stakeholders in faculties and other environments, including other tertiary institutions nationally and internationally.
- Improving sustainability by ensuring that new training possibilities be explored and that existing interpreting services be profiled more visibly.
- Contributing to reporting processes by compiling and maintaining operational and statistical information related to interpreting activities.
- Coordinating project workflows relating to other language services such as translation, editing and transcription as well as communicating with clients, allocating work to language practitioners, monitoring schedules and ensuring that deadlines are met.
- Assisting the Head with the coordination of staff workload, schedules and operational planning within Language Services, especially pertaining to interpreting services.
- Assisting the Head with the recruitment, monitoring and payment of freelance interpreters and other freelance language practitioners.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement and sustainability of Language Services through process optimisation and service development initiatives.
- Promoting multilingualism and a multilingual mindset through the coordination of language services such as interpreting, as well as by offering students, staff and members of the public access to academic and other material in various languages e.g. translating and editing academic podcasts, and subtitling video material.
- Providing educational and conference interpreting when required.
- Supporting context-specific research to inform best practice in the field of simultaneous interpreting.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- An appropriate master's degree in language practice or a language-related field.
- At least three years' interpreting experience in a higher education environment.
- Experience in project management.
- Experience in leading a small team.
- Experience in financial administration.
- Highly developed organisational skills and the ability to work in a complex environment.
- The ability to manage time efficiently and work to strict deadlines.
- Computer literacy in MS Office e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills in English and Afrikaans/isiXhosa.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- Experience in language technologies e.g. CAT tools and/or CAI tools.
- SATI accreditation in simultaneous interpreting.
- Commitment to continuous professional development.
- Knowledge of Stellenbosch University's systems e.g. SUNLearn.
