Introduction

  • The Centre for Academic Planning and Quality Promotion forms part of the Division for Teaching Excellence. The Centre promotes the strategic alignment of academic planning with the UJ mission and national requirements. The Centre provides support for the planning of new programmes and qualifications and is responsible for facilitating the internal and external approval processes for programmes and quality reviews. The Centre supports the management and review of existing programmes in line with institutional and national policy. The successful candidate will contribute to fulfilment of the Centre's responsibilities and ensure that its business is conducted efficiently and in line with legislative and policy requirements. The Centre is seeking a qualified and experienced professional who will demonstrate capacity in terms of its operational requirements and deliver appropriate high-level support to academic and administrative staff, and relevant University structures, on quality assurance activities both internally and externally. The incumbent will advise and render support to faculties in all aspects of programme development and/or quality reviews.
  • The primary focus of this position is to work closely with academic staff in faculties in the development of new programmes and review of existing programmes. The incumbent will be required to provide both curriculum advice and advice on meeting internal and external regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Work with the Manager: Academic Planning and Quality Promotion with regards to:

  • Support academic planning within the institution and coordinate quality assurance and registration activities and processes DHET, CHE and SAQA.
  • Provide support on online applications, including programme accreditation and qualification registration applications internally on the management information system and on external systems of the regulatory bodies.
  • Coordinate processes relating to both internal and external quality assurance and monitor compliance.
  • Coordinate programme development and quality reviews across faculties.
  • Support faculties and the CAPQP with all professional body accreditation and audit activities.
  • If required, attend professional body / quality council training and other events.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders regarding programme accreditation and qualification registration.
  • Assist with all accreditations and site visit preparations.
  • Provide input on reports in preparation for accreditation visits and feedback on faculty improvement plans.
  • Participate as required in capacity development activities, internally and externally.
  • Participate as required in curriculum transformation activities.
  • Collaborate and assist in quality promotion activities in the university and participate in benchmarking the UJ quality promotion system.
  • Provide support on the development of short learning programmes and coordinate SLP approvals.
  • Contribute to the Centre's role as Secretariat for the quality committee in the preparation of meeting documents, including minutes, and participation at meetings.
  • Facilitate staff capacity development activities on programme development and review, etc. and provide training for peer reviewers on internal quality reviews.
  • Participate in engagements with higher education institutions and stakeholders as required, on:
  • Quality assurance/ promotion matters;
  • Policy related matters;
  • Other aspects of shared value;
  • Internal and external programme and curriculum-related workshops, conferences etc.
  • Assist with drafting quality assurance reports for approval by governance and management structures.
  • Assist with the conceptualisation, development, review and drafting of UJ policies, processes, procedures and documents relevant to the work of the Centre.
  • Provide support in new institutional developments as and when required.
  • Provide input on annual and quarterly reports and reports due to management and governance structures.
  • Coordinate, curate and/or facilitate practice-labs and collabs as part of the Centre's academic development initiatives framed within the Division's capacity-building programme.
  • Contribute to the Centre/Division's publications, such as magazines, newsletters, and content for the webpage and Learning Management System.
  • Assist with updating and revising programme and Centre's manuals and related documentation.
  • Provide support in data capturing, processing and managing online information management systems, e.g. academic programme tracking.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops and events organised and hosted by the Centre/Division.
  • Supervise staff within a line management function.

Minimum requirements

  • A Bachelors' Degree NQF 7 in Education, Social Sciences, or a relevant field.
  • Two 2 to three 3 years of experience in coordinating programme development and reviews.
  • Two 2 to three 3 years of experience in quality assurance of higher education in South Africa.
  • Two 2 to three 3 years of experience in working with regulatory bodies in higher education.
  • Knowledge of the post-school education and training sector and relevant legislation and policy.
  • Working knowledge of the internal and external environments of higher education, with specific reference to the broad activities of quality assurance and its processes.
  • In-depth understanding of quality assurance and policy implementation for quality in higher education institutions.

Recommendations

  • A Postgraduate qualification - A Master's degree is desirable.
  • Ability to harness technological advancements to improve operational efficiency.
  • In-depth understanding of academic planning, quality assurance, and policy implementation in higher education institutions.
  • Qualitative and/or quantitative research skills.
  • Working knowledge of University systems, structures and processes.
