- Troubleshooting and maintaining PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, VSDs, and instrumentation systems
- Calibration and configuration of field instrumentation and sensors
- Understanding of industrial control protocols e.g., Profibus, Ethernet/IP, Modbus
- System backups, documentation, and change control for automation systems
- Support for plant automation upgrades and projects
- Compliance with engineering and SHEQ standards
- Collaboration with cross-functional teams to resolve automation and control issues
Key Duties & Responsibilities Automation and Instrumentation Reliability
- Maintain PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, VSDs, servo systems, industrial PCs, instrumentation and related control system infrastructure.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation and instrumentation faults that impact plant availability, line efficiency or equipment reliability.
- Conduct root cause analysis on repeat failures and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
- Support optimisation of machine sequences, utilities, processing and production line control systems to improve efficiency and reduce waste, water and energy losses.
Control System Governance and System Integrity
- Conduct routine backups of PLC, HMI, SCADA, industrial PC, VSD, servo and machine parameter systems.
- Maintain software version control and ensure all control system changes follow approved change control processes.
- Test backups and disaster recovery procedures to ensure systems can be restored with minimal downtime.
- Maintain adherence to approved control systems standards and ensure plant automation infrastructure remains aligned to approved technical requirements
Instrumentation Calibration and Technical Compliance
- Execute and maintain the plant instrumentation calibration programme .
- Ensure calibration certificates and records are complete, accurate and audit ready.
- Maintain instrumentation installation, configuration, calibration and documentation standards.
- Ensure automation and instrumentation work complies with SHEQ, GMP, food safety, electrical and engineering standards.
Technical Documentation and Asset Management
- Maintain and update P&IDs, electrical schematics, control panel designs, industrial network diagrams and technical documentation.
- Identify critical automation and instrumentation spares and support availability of required spares.
- Support automation asset management by monitoring system health, technical risks, obsolescence and reliability concerns.
- Conduct risk assessments on automation equipment and support mitigation actions.
Project, Commissioning and Technical Support
- Provide technical input into automation related plant projects, upgrades and modifications.
- Support FAT, SAT, commissioning, start up and handover of new or modified automationnsystems.
- Liaise with OEMs, vendors and internal engineering teams for specialist technical support.
- Provide escalation support to the Process Control Technician for complex shift based automation, instrumentation or control system faults.
KBI
- Automation and instrumentation related downtime.
- Repeat automation and instrumentation failures.
- Preventative maintenance completion for automation and instrumentation assets.
- Backup completion and disaster recovery test compliance.
- Calibration completion and audit readiness. Control system availability and restoration time after failure.
- Number of unresolved or recurring PLC, HMI, SCADA, VSD, servo or instrumentation faults.
- Compliance with change control, version control and technical documentation standards.
- Project commissioning and handover effectiveness.
- Reduction in energy, water, waste and efficiency losses linked to control system performance.
Skills, Experience & Education Education
- N6 / S4 in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation, Mechatronics, Control Systems or related field.
- Preferred: National Diploma in Electrical Engineering,
- Instrumentation, Mechatronics or Control Systems.
- Electrical or Instrumentation trade test advantageous.
Experience
- Minimum 3 5 years' experience as a Control & Automation
- Technician, Automation Technician, Process Control Technician or similar role in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong experience with PLC, HMI, SCADA, VSD, servo, instrumentation and industrial network systems.
- Experience with Siemens S7 300 / S7 1500 PLC hardware and software, STEP 7 and TIA Portal.
- Experience with Siemens HMI hardware and software, including WinCC and TIA Portal.
- Experience with AVEVA, Archestra , InTouch or similar SCADA platforms.
- Experience in bottling, packaging, processing, utilities or FMCG manufacturing environments advantageous.
- Experience supporting fillers, labellers , blow moulders , shrink wrappers, palletisers , blenders, water treatment and processing plant equipment advantageous.
- Experience with automation backups, disaster recovery, calibration programmes , technical documentation and root cause
Skills
- PLC diagnostics, programming support and controlled modifications.
- HMI and SCADA configuration support.
- VSD and servo drive diagnostics.
- Instrumentation calibration, configuration, installation and fault finding. Industrial network troubleshooting, including Ethernet,
- Profinet , Profibus, AS i , Modbus and similar protocols.
- Ability to interpret and update P&IDs, schematics, loop diagrams, control panel drawings and network diagrams.
- Control loop understanding and process control principles.
- Root cause analysis and structured problem solving.
- Backup management, disaster recovery and version control discipline
- Technical coaching and knowledge transfer.
- Strong SHEQ, GMP, food safety and engineering standards awareness.
