Construction Manager | Postmasburg | 14-month contract

Duties & Responsibilities

• Ensure all construction activities comply with Anglo American safety, health and environmental requirements and applicable legislation, SHE policies and procedures.

• Stop and escalate unsafe work, critical risks and material non-compliances to the Project Manager.

• Maintain disciplined site housekeeping, access control and work-area standards.

• Lead and participate in VFLs, task risk assessments, critical control verification and timely close-out of safety actions.

• Ensure contractor and subcontractor compliance with SHE standards, approved method statements and permit-to-work requirements.

• Review construction work packs, method statements, lift plans, temporary works, inspection and test plans, and readiness for execution.

• Verify construction readiness, including issued-for-construction information, materials, access, permits, resources and interface clearances.

• Implement and enforce the project Construction Quality Plan and approved inspection and test requirements.

• Ensure construction alignment with Group Technical Standards, project specifications, approved designs and statutory requirements.

• Lead constructability reviews and coordinate operational input to ensure safe, practical and cost-effective execution.

• Define construction accountabilities, workfront ownership and interfaces to protect the owner's interests and avoid gaps or overlaps

• Actively monitor contractor scope and field conditions to prevent unauthorised scope growth and rework.

• Support development and validation of the construction WBS, work packages and control accounts.

• Maintain integrity between scope, WBS, schedule, quantities, progress measurement and cost reporting.

• Initiate formal change control where applicable and maintain field-change discipline.

• Review construction change requests and field instructions, assessing safety, scope, quality, cost and schedule impacts.

• Identify construction variances and analyse root causes.

• Develop and implement corrective actions and schedule recovery options.

• Support contractor prequalification, tender evaluation, mobilisation and administration of construction contracts.

• Track contractor progress, productivity, resources, quality and compliance with the approved schedule and budget.

• Address contractor deviations and underperformance promptly through contractual and performance-management processes.

• Serve as the primary site interface for contractors and clarify owner requirements, priorities and constraints.

• Validate contractor progress claims, measured quantities and payment recommendations against work completed and contract terms.

• Support contract administration, claims avoidance and commercial risk treatment.

• Ensure accurate, auditable construction records, daily reports, redlines, quality dossiers and completion documentation.

• Ensure seamless integration between contractors and the owner's team, including engineering, project controls, operations readiness, environmental, procurement and commercial functions.

• Facilitate timely exchange of construction information, decisions and constraints between the owner and contractors.

• Work closely with Project Controls to manage critical-path activities, constraints, productivity, forecasts and recovery plans.

• Coordinate with procurement and contracts teams on materials, vendor data, expediting, logistics and contractual requirements.

• Establish auditable progress measurement, quantity tracking, site reporting and completion-control systems.

• Communicate key construction priorities, constraints, risks and decisions clearly to stakeholders.

• Identify construction risks associated with work methods, interfaces, temporary works, logistics, site conditions and contractor performance.

• Implement mitigation actions and escalate significant construction risks to the Project Manager.

• Monitor site and external conditions that may affect construction delivery and project objectives.

• Prepare and present regular construction reports covering safety, progress, productivity, quality, cost, schedule, risks and decisions required.

• Provide construction support to engineering, commissioning, operational readiness and other project functions.

• Conduct construction evaluations, constructability reviews and execution-readiness assessments as required.

• Ensure construction activities, contractors and site controls comply with South African mining legislation, environmental requirements, approved permits and project commitments.

• Maintain awareness of applicable regulatory requirements and ensure ongoing site compliance.

• Support implementation of environmental and social management commitments during construction.

• Enforce legal, contractual and corporate governance requirements across construction activities.

• Maintain appropriate stakeholder relationships, enhancing the corporate profile and fostering collaboration.

• Provide relevant construction information and support to stakeholders, ensuring interfaces and commitments are managed effectively.

• Maintain effective internal and external relationships, including with contractors, consultants, operations, regulatory authorities and affected stakeholders.

• Collaborate with the Project Manager, engineering and project controls teams to identify and manage construction risks throughout execution.

• Enforce compliance requirements and ensure team adherence to legal policies and corporate governance principles.

• Support construction cost control through disciplined quantity verification, productivity monitoring, forecasting and change management.

• Collaborate with the Project Manager, Commercial Manager and Project Controls team to identify and manage construction cost and commercial risks throughout execution

Desired Experience & Qualification

• Bachelor's degree or National Diploma in Construction Management, Civil, Mechanical, Electrical or Mining Engineering, or a related discipline.

• Minimum 10 years of relevant construction experience on mining or heavy industrial projects, including significant site leadership experience.

• Demonstrated experience managing multidisciplinary contractors through construction, completion and handover.

• Postgraduate qualification in Construction or Project Management.

• Professional registration with ECSA, SACPCMP or an equivalent recognised body.

• Previous owner-team construction management experience.

• Experience on iron ore, mining infrastructure, materials handling or process plant projects.

• Formal project management or contract management qualification.

• Valid South African driver's licence.

• Valid medical fitness certificate for mine and construction-site access.

• Relevant legal appointment or competency certification where required.

• Professional registration with ECSA or SACPCMP.

• Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent.

• Construction safety, lifting or contract-management certification.
