Purpose of the Role

  • The Business Manager is responsible for driving the commercial performance, operational effectiveness, financial health, and strategic growth of a business unit within an EPCM environment. The role partners closely with technical and project leadership teams to ensure successful project execution, profitable operations, client satisfaction, and sustainable business growth.

Key Responsibilities

Business Leadership & Strategy

  • Support the development and execution of business unit strategies and growth plans.
  • Identify opportunities to expand services, enter new markets, and grow key client accounts.
  • Monitor market trends, competitor activities, and industry developments.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

Financial Management

  • Manage business unit budgets, forecasts, and financial performance.
  • Monitor revenue, profitability, utilization rates, overhead costs, and project margins.
  • Provide financial analysis and reporting to senior leadership.
  • Support business planning and annual budgeting processes.
  • Drive financial accountability across project and operational teams.

Commercial Management

  • Participate in proposal development, bid reviews, and contract negotiations.
  • Ensure commercial risks are identified and managed appropriately.
  • Monitor project performance against contractual obligations.
  • Support claims management and dispute resolution when required.

Operational Management

  • Work closely with Project Managers and Discipline Leads to ensure efficient resource utilization.
  • Monitor project delivery performance, productivity, and operational effectiveness.
  • Support workforce planning and recruitment strategies.
  • Establish and track key operational performance indicators.

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients.
  • Participate in client engagement, business development activities, and key account management.
  • Support client satisfaction initiatives and strategic account planning.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business and framework agreements.

Governance, Risk & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and governance requirements.
  • Monitor business and project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Support quality management, health, safety, and environmental objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with contractual, legal, and regulatory requirements.

People Leadership

  • Support leadership teams in talent management and succession planning.
  • Develop and mentor employees to strengthen business capability.
  • Foster a high-performance and collaborative culture.
  • Promote employee engagement and retention initiatives.

Key Performance Indicators KPIs

  • Revenue growth.
  • Gross margin and profitability.
  • Utilization and staff productivity.
  • Project delivery performance.
  • Client satisfaction and retention.
  • Proposal win rate.
  • Working capital and cash flow performance.
  • Employee engagement and retention.
  • Achievement of strategic growth objectives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Legal, Commerce, Business Management, Project Management, or related field.
  • Postgraduate qualification MBA or equivalent advantageous.

Experience

  • 10+ years' experience within an EPCM, engineering consulting, mining, infrastructure, or industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in business operations, commercial management, financial management, or business leadership.
  • Experience supporting large, multi-disciplinary engineering projects.
  • Strong understanding of project delivery lifecycles and EPCM business models.
