Job Title: Bookkeeper - Various areas (Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga) Start Date: 2026-08-20 - 2026-09-19 Vacancy Type: Permanent PTA001995 Sectors: Finance Location: Eastern Cape , Port Elizabeth Salary: R25 000 - R25 000 Monthly Brief: We are looking for experienced candidates for our client in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Eastern Cape Role Purpose The Bookkeeper is responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting, payroll, reconciliations, statutory submissions and financial administration of the business. The role ensures accurate financial records, effective cash and creditor controls, timeous payroll processing, compliance with statutory requirements, and accurate month-end and year-end reporting. The incumbent will also oversee the accounting office and provide financial and administrative support to management and the Directors. Key Responsibilities Accounting & Financial Administration Capture and process all financial transactions on the approved accounting system. Perform bank reconciliations covering cash, EFTs, card transactions, debtor deposits and company payments. Process and reconcile creditor accounts and ensure payments are made within approved terms and limits. Complete month-end creditor statement reconciliations and investigate discrepancies. Manage month-end accounting procedures and prepare monthly and year-end financial reports. Maintain accurate accounting records through trial balance . Apply sound accrual accounting principles across the accounting function. Complete and maintain financial documentation required for credit applications and audits. Assist with year-end audit preparation by providing accurate financial information and supporting documentation. Manage and resolve accounting and financial queries, escalating material issues to the Directors. Payroll Administration Manage and process monthly payroll, including salary and wage calculations and payments. Capture and maintain accurate payroll data on the approved payroll system. Process and reconcile statutory and employee-related deductions, including PAYE, UIF, SDL, provident funds, medical aid, garnishee orders and relevant union deductions. Investigate and resolve payroll queries timeously. Maintain accurate employee payroll and leave records in liaison with HR. Prepare and submit relevant employment-related reports, including WRA or IOD documentation, within prescribed timelines. Liaise with bargaining councils, statutory bodies and other relevant organisations where required. Tax & Statutory Compliance Prepare, reconcile and submit VAT201 and EMP201 returns and ensure payments are made within statutory deadlines. Assist with EMP501 mid-year and annual reconciliations and submissions. Maintain accurate supporting documentation for all statutory submissions. Ensure compliance with applicable financial, payroll, tax, POPIA/PAIA and other legislative requirements. Reconciliations & Financial Controls Perform regular and accurate bank, creditor, payroll and balance sheet reconciliations. Investigate and resolve reconciliation discrepancies. Maintain effective financial controls and ensure transactions are properly authorised and recorded. Manage the site change float and ensure all checks, balances and monthly reconciliations are completed. Manage and safeguard petty cash and ensure all transactions are properly recorded and supported. Report any financial discrepancies or control weaknesses to the Directors. Records & Filing Maintain an accurate, organised and confidential filing system for financial, payroll and employee records. Ensure records are retained and archived in accordance with company standards and statutory requirements. Maintain employee records and documentation in liaison with HR. Ensure financial and employee information is handled in accordance with POPIA/PAIA requirements. Management & General Administration Manage the accounting office and coordinate day-to-day accounting activities. Monitor the accuracy and timeliness of accounting inputs performed by other administrative employees. Provide guidance and support to employees regarding finance, payroll and accounting queries. Liaise regularly with Directors and senior management regarding financial and accounting matters. Ensure delegated accounting responsibilities are properly completed and controlled. Perform additional accounting and administrative duties as reasonably required by management. Detail: Role Requirements Minimum Qualifications & Experience Matric / Grade 12. Relevant accounting or bookkeeping qualification would be advantageous. Proven experience in a bookkeeping/accounting role with responsibility for the full accounting function. Experience processing accounting transactions through to trial balance . Strong practical experience in bank, creditor, payroll and other financial reconciliations . Thorough understanding of accrual accounting . Experience with payroll processing and statutory deductions. Experience with VAT201, EMP201 and EMP501 submissions. Working knowledge of South African payroll and tax requirements. Systems SAGE 300 Accpac . SAGE 300 People Payroll . Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Key Skills & Competencies Strong numerical and analytical ability. Excellent reconciliation and attention-to-detail skills. Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial controls. Accurate and methodical approach to financial administration. Ability to meet strict month-end, payroll and statutory deadlines. Strong problem-solving and investigative skills. High level of integrity and confidentiality. Strong organisational and administrative skills. Ability to communicate effectively with employees, management, Directors and external stakeholders. Ability to work independently while taking full ownership of the accounting function.
