Introduction

Aviagen is currently looking for an experienced Assistant Hatchery Manager who will primarily be responsible for assisting the Hatchery Manager in planning, developing and implementing policies and practices for operation of hatchery, ensuring attainment of goals and profitable operation. Direct strategic operational plans for hatching eggs and chick production. Responsible for compliance with all company policies and Hatchery procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

Assisting with the management of all aspects of the hatchery operations including but not limited to:

  • Assist with receiving of eggs and accurate capturing of all egg numbers, the reconciliation thereof with what were dispatch from the breeder site and checking accurate grading of eggs on farm level.
  • Assist with overseeing the grading of eggs in the hatchery and accurate recording of egg numbers in the different categories.
  • Assist with the preparing of eggs to be set according to setting schedule and signing off that eggs were set according to set schedule.
  • Manage setting plan including restore machine.
  • Manage the processing of day-old chicks including vaccination.
  • Manage and coordinate, hatchery activities: egg pick-up and deliveries, care, incubation and hatching, grading, vaccination, and preparation and shipping of chicks
  • Manage and coordinate the maintenance of facility and equipment
  • Manage chick care, maintenance, packing, and transfer activities
  • Communicate with and assist Hatchery Supervisors to project egg needs
  • Communicate and coordinate with contract service providers where applicable
  • Manage and maintain weekly hatch schedules, providing proper numbers
  • Monitor and manage facility equipment and repairs, addressing maintenance issues.
  • Maintain hatchery sanitation
  • Establish and manage safety policies and procedures
  • Ensure all biosecurity procedures are implemented and adhered to.
  • Ensure all animal welfare procedures are implemented and adhered to
  • Maintain current knowledge of industry trends and information regarding hatchery equipment and operations
  • Manage reports, review and analyze, performing corrective measures
  • Comply with safety and corporate guidelines on business ethics
  • Perform all other duties as assigned

Desired Experience & Qualification

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agricultural/ Animal Science, Biology, or related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 4 years’ progressive hatchery experience or a combination of hatchery and related poultry industry experience
  • Minimum 2 years’ supervisor experience within similar environment
  • Maintenance knowledge (e.g. electrical, mechanical, PLC operations, heating and cooling, hydraulics, etc.)
  • Advanced interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, develop, and motivate people
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of math functions and skills
  • Practical computer skills with solid knowledge of MS Office programs
  • Advanced organizational skills, with attention to detail
  • Demonstrated sound work ethic, honesty, and moral character
  • Understand and interpret data while drawing logical conclusions based on available inputs
  • Critical thinking skills in standardized situations as well as non-routine problems
  • Manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and prioritize work accordingly
