MINIMUM - COMPETENCIES

  • Animal Diseases Act, 1984. Veterinary and Para-veterinary Professions Act, 1982. Animal Identification Act, 2002. Knowledge of animal health, disease control and animal welfare. Computer literacy in MS Package- Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Good communication written and verbal and interpersonal skills. Report writing and administrative skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams. Willingness to travel extensively and work after hours when required . Problem solving skills and decision-making skills and working under pressure. A valid driver's license.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12 plus a recognised BSc Agriculture Animal Health Degree or a National Diploma in Animal Health, recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority SAQA.
  • Current registration with the South African Veterinary Council SAVC as an Animal Health Technician. A minimum of 1-year appropriate post-qualification-experience will be an added advantage.

DUTIES

  • Animal disease surveillance; detection and monitoring. Animal disease containment and control, including animal and animal products permit movement control. Plan and implement disease control measures. Conduct veterinary regulatory inspections at designated areas . Test animals for TB and CA .
  • Provide assistance with wildlife disease investigation and research, where applicable. Provide assistance with primary animal health care- Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and vaccines under veterinary supervision.
  • Assist with disease outbreaks, injured animals, and other animal-health emergencies. Perform basic diagnostic tests and prepare samples for veterinary laboratories.
  • Educate animal owners and farmers about disease prevention, responsible animal care, and reporting suspected diseases . Advise farmers on animal health, hygiene, nutrition, housing, and disease prevention.
